I think it was Engels who once wrote that the worker must devote him­self pas­sion­ately and strive at all times to add value.1

  1. Marx, mean­while, is quite fam­ously quoted express­ing a sen­ti­ment whose gist runs that the better shaped the product, the more mis-shapen the worker. The more civ­il­ised the object, the more bar­baric the worker. The more power­ful the work, the more power­less the worker. I’m a stupid shape, totally bar­baric and pretty feeble, which is a good sign.
